Today we’re comparing Avira’s Premium Security Suite and the Award Winning AVG Internet Security. Avira again are relatively unknown to the typical user but I think in a few years time it will be fighting AVG, Norton and McAfee for the most popular software providers. For more about Avira check out their website! The comparison will involve an overview of the features each package has and then at the end we’ll tell you which we think is better through our rating system. Our ratings are worked out by the amount of ticks the product has. Further points are awarded for faster download, simpler/better installation and cheaper price.
Overall I have been very impressed with Avira’s Premium Security Suite! It’s really given AVG Internet Security a run for its money! As you can see, Avira’s feature’s aren’t quite as extensive as AVG’s, this is represented by the lower price. For Avira to really compete with the likes of AVG they will need to increase its compatibility and bring in features such as Identity Protection. Avira’s userface could also do with a ‘facelift’ to make it easier to user and generally nicer to look at.
To conclude, watch out for Avira in the next few years…it’s bound to be big!

Today we’re doing our fourth Anti-Virus software comparison. Today we’re looking at Award Winning AVG Internet Security and avast! Professional Edition. Now a lot of you will be sitting there thinking, ‘I’ve never heard of avast!’. avast! are another ‘smaller’ Anti-Virus software company which is snapping at the heals of the ‘Big Three’, AVG, Norton and McAfee. For more about avast! check out their website! The comparison will involve an overview of the features each package has and then at the end we’ll tell you which we think is better through our rating system. Our ratings are worked out by the amount of ticks the product has. Further points are awarded for faster download, simpler/better installation and cheaper price.
Overall AVG Internet Security is the better software by far, however, it is almost £15 more. I would say that spending that extra £15 is worth it, especially if you look at the tools/features that you get with AVG compared to avast! I would say avast! has loads of potential but it the product needs to be far more extensive to warrant a purchase. After all, some of the features they’re missing out on are pretty basic, necessities for any Anti-Virus software. avast! has a really cool interface (see picture), however it isn’t that easy to find you way around.

Today we continue our series of Antivirus comparisons. This time round we’re comparing Kaspersky Internet Security and the Award Winning AVG Internet Security. Many of you wouldn’t have heard of Kaspersky as it’s not one of the big three. To find out more check out their website! The comparison will involve an overview of the features each package has and then at the end we’ll tell you which we think is better through our rating system. Our ratings are worked out by the amount of ticks the product has. Further points are awarded for faster download, simpler/better installation and cheaper price.
Overall, I am very impressed with Kaspersky Internet Security. It has great potential, it just needs some tlc. I can see Kaspersky really fighting AVG for the top spot in a few years time, but it is the new boy on the block and still has a little further to go. Furthermore, Kaspersky’s virus protection statistics aren’t as good as the ‘Big Three’ (McAfee, Norton and AVG). AVG has an all round better performance and product quality. One thing I really don’t like about Kaspersky is its lack of compatability. For example, you would expect your antivirus software to go with complementary products, such as; SpyBot – Search and Destroy. Whereas Kaspersky doesn’t, which is very frustrating. You have to uninstall all security software before you install Kaspersky.

Over the next few weeks we are going to run a series of comparisons between different Anti-Virus Software. In these comparison post’s we’re going to show you the main features that the two products provide and then tell you which we think is better through our rating system. Our ratings are worked out by the amount of ticks the product has. Further points are awarded for faster download, simpler/better installation and cheaper price. This time it is Norton’s 360 v3.0 vs AVG’s Award Winning Internet Security v8.5.
So to conclude, from our investigations and playing around with the two software’s, we can announce that we think AVG Internet Security is the better software of the two. It may not have any backup software within the package but it works out cheaper to get AVG and then buy yourself a decent back up tool and external hard drive.
Next time we’ll be comparing AVG Internet Security with McAfee Total Protection.

This blog will show you how to use AVG Free Edition efficiently and effectively. AVG is a free (for personal use) virus scanning software download which we have found to be an excellent virus scanner.
AVG Will automatically update each day if the computer is connected to the Internet. The update will take roughly one minute on a Broadband connection but may take longer if you are on a dial-up connection. The AVG icon is the square on the left-hand side of the picture below.

To manually update you simply right-click on the AVG icon and select check for updates. However, you must be connected to the internet to do this. Again the update will take roughly one minute, on a broadband connection but may take longer if you are on a dial-up connection. If the AVG icon becomes slightly grey it means that AVG is in need of updating.
How to run a Scan:
To run a virus scan you must firstly double click on the AVG icon located on the bottom right-hand side of your screen.
Secondly click on ‘Test Centre’ situated on the left-hand side of the AVG window.

Then a second AVG window will appear. Simply select ‘Scan Computer’ and your computer will begin to search for viruses. AVG will then deal with the virus. The scan will take approximately 1 hour.

How to change the time of a Scheduled Scan:
AVG automatically is set to do a system scan at 8.00 am each day. If the computer is switched on after 8.00 am, AVG will automatically run a system scan as soon as the computer is switched on. The scan should take roughly 1 hour depending on the speed of the computer and the amount of files there are on it. To change the time of a scan follow the instructions below:
Firstly double-click on the AVG icon located on the bottom right-hand side of your screen.

This will open up the window below. Click once on ‘Scheduler’ and then select ‘Scheduled Tasks’.

By doing this a new window will open. Click once on ‘Test Plan In Basic Mode’ to highlight it and then select ‘Edit Schedule’.

Then the window below will appear. All you need to do is simply change the date and time in the bar, either using the arrows or keyboard. Once you have made your changes click ‘OK’ or to delete changes click ‘Cancel’.

How to cancel todays scan:
When a virus scan is happening the computer will slow down a fair amount. If you wish to cancel the scan for that day, follow the instructions below:
Firstly right click on the AVG sign with a white triangle in the middle, which is placed on the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. The white triangle simply means that AVG is running a Scan.

Then simply select ‘Cancel Scanning’.

How to stop all daily scan:
To stop the computer scanning daily double click on the AVG icon.

This will open the window below. Click once on the ‘Scheduler’ and then select ‘Schedule Tasks’.

By doing this a new window will open. Click once on ‘Test Plan In Basic Mode’ to highlight it and then select ‘Edit Schedule’.

Then simply un-check the box which says ‘Periodically Start Scheduled Anti-Virus Test’. This will mean that you will have to manually run a test, we recommend a scan once a week for most machines.

If this helps please let us know!
