Poll Review – Do you use iPlayer?

December 15th, 2009

Do you use iPlayer?

Our most recent poll was ‘Do you use iPlayer?’ 67% voted ‘Yes’, 33% ‘No’ and thankfully there were no votes for ‘What is it?’

However, for those of you who don’t know what BBC iPlayer is read our Brandstar post about BBC iPlayer from back when it was introduced! See ‘BBC iPlayer – catch up on missed TV

Here at PCToolbox we think that the likes of the BBC iPlayer are brilliant and in the future I reckon they’ll be the main way people watch TV shows!

ITV (PCToolbox Review), Channel 4, Channel Five and Sky all have their own equivalents. Check them out!

Don’t forget to vote on this month’s poll…’where do you access Facebook?’

Google Chrome OS – Yikes!

July 14th, 2009

Google ChromeGoogle is developing an operating system (OS) for personal computers, in a direct challenge to market leader Microsoft and its Windows system.

Google Chrome OS will be aimed initially at small, low-cost netbooks, but will eventually be used on PC’s as well.

Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by middle 2010.

“Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS,” the firm said in its official blog.

The operating system, which will run on an open source license, was a “natural extension” of its Chrome browser, the firm said.

The news comes just months before Microsoft launches the latest version of its operating system, called Windows 7.

bbc.co.uk – refreshing new beta site

December 22nd, 2007

The BBC website has to be one of the biggest sites from the UK offering everything from News, TV, Radio, Sport and Weather but my view is that it’s a fairly dull and boring site. Useful for checking the football news but that is about it, certainly not a replacement for my interactive, useful and interesting iGoogle page. But it looks like all that is changing … Enter BBC Beta!

The BBC have recently released their Beta website for all to see and it is good, very good. They have injected some life into it, the centrally aligned site with a colourful header is far more welcoming than the previous grey and light blue. The BBC logo is bigger and more obvious with I think is important gives the site a significant identity and the analogue clock on the right hand side is a nice touch.

The highly customisable homepage allows you to select whatever you want to see. Starting with the general subjects News, Sport, Entertainment, TV, etc down to specifically what sport and which entertainment news. Then these “blocks” of information can then be moved virtually anywhere on the main page.

It is still in development and there is much work to be done, but it has the potential to replace my iGoogle page..will it? Probably not, even though there is much of the same content on my igoogle page the BBC site doesn’t and most probably won’t have a module to link to my gmail account. Which igoogle does so I can see a snapshot of my emails. But who knows .. I might be tempted.

Have a look and let us know what you think, or get in touch with the BBC and tell them what they need to add :)
